The Australian Counselling Association (ACA) was established in 1999. Since then, it has become a leading independent counsellor registration and industry representative body. Chapters / Member State Associations were established in each state of Australia.

On the 18th of July 2003 the Victorian chapter, while remaining a member association of ACA, became an incorporated body. The incorporated body became known as the Federation of Victorian Counsellors Inc (FVC).
