Dear Mental Health Professional,

Finding relevant professional development can be challenging. Firstly there is the geographical challenge - not all activities are delivered near your location. Secondly there is the timing challenge - activities do not always cover the topic of your interest at the time you have available. Thirdly there is the financial obstacle - physical CPD activities can be costly once you sum up registration fees and logistics required to attend.

These challenges can be a significant impediment to how much professional development you can access each year – and create a great deal of stress if you are required to attain a minimum number of CPD hours per year to maintain your membership or board registration.

What if you could access over 300 hours of CPD, including numerous programs covering Focused Psychological Strategies (FPS) topic areas, from the comfort of your workplace or home, and at your convenience? With Mental Health Academy, now you can.

And during a limited time only we’re offering you a special welcome gift when you join Mental Health Academy. You’ll receive access to the Psychological First Aid course, valued at $595.00 – absolutely free. This is the most valuable CPD investment you’ll ever make. But before we get to that, let’s review what you’ll receive with your membership.

Exclusive Limited Time Offer

Receive a bonus course valued at $595.00

During a limited time only, we're offering you a big incentive to join. When you register your membership, you’ll get complimentary access to Mental Health Academy’s exclusive 10-hour Psychological First Aid program.

Psychological First Aid

The Psychological First Aid course is a comprehensive 10-hour program developed by Mental Health Academy in partnership with counsellor and psychology educators. The program’s content is referenced from dozens of international, peer-reviewed publications in the areas of disaster relief, social support and critical incident counselling, and framed around the internationally accepted principals of the NCTSN Field Operations Guide.

The Psychological First Aid course will equip you to successfully enter a disaster relief setting or situation of narrower-scale adversity, and offer Psychological First Aid, promoting safety, calmness, empowerment, connectedness, and hope to survivors. It assumes that you know the basics of sitting with someone in distress – that is, the counselling microskills – although many experienced disaster volunteers are not trained mental health professionals, and indeed, those who are will see that the skill set required to successfully offer Psychological First Aid is quite different from that needed in “regular” practice.

Upon successful completion of the course you will be able to:

  1. Define Psychological First Aid, and explain what it aims to do
  2. Delineate its role within the broader scheme of disaster services
  3. Identify the parameters of effective Psychological First Aid: the who, what, when, where, how, and why of service delivery
  4. Know what actions to take to carry out the core principles of Psychological First Aid: those which promote safety, calmness, empowerment, connectedness, and hope
  5. Identify the factors that will facilitate successful entry into the disaster setting
  6. Assess whether you are ready to deliver Psychological First Aid
  7. Tend to your needs for self-care
  8. Provide survivors with appropriate “fact sheet” handouts and other information to help them cope.

The most convenient way to undertake your mandatory

Registered Psychologists can submit Mental Health Academy programs as part of their recommended annual 'active CPD' activities.

Frequently Asked Questions

How are courses and videos delivered?

For your convenience, Mental Health Academy courses are delivered online. Each course is hosted on the website (thus, there is nothing to download) and includes readings, assessment questions, tables and diagrams, audios, videos and other supporting materials (depending on the course).

Similarly to courses, Mental Health Academy video workshops are delivered online, using webstreaming technology. Webstreaming is the same technology utilised in websites such as You Tube. Videos also include downloadable resources that support your learning, such as PowerPoints, leader guides, reports and additional readings.

Do I have to pay extra fees for each course or video I subscribe to?

No. Mental Health Academy memberships are all-inclusive. This means that once you pay your monthly or annual membership fee, you can access all MHA programs at no additional cost to your fixed, ongoing membership fees.

How often do you release new CPD programs?

Very often. On average, we release 2-3 new CPD programs each month. MHA members also receive a free weekly newsletter with industry news; links to articles, research and resources; plus much more.

Do you issue certificates upon completion of a program?

All Mental Health Academy programs include a self-paced, mandatory online assessment component. When you submit your assessment for a course or video and achieve the minimum 80% completion rate, you are able to download a branded certificate of completion stating your results.

What happens if I don't attain the minimum 80% pass rate?

You can review (for reference, your incorrect answers will be marked red when you return to the assessment page after having submitted your assessment), save your progress and re-submit your answers at any time if you haven't attained the minimum 80% pass rate for a course or video.

I’m a registered psychologist; do I accrue CPD hours by completing your programs?

All Mental Health Academy programs fit the criteria for "Active CPD" established by the Psychology Board of Australia. Upon completion of any Mental Health Academy program, psychologists can download a branded certificate stating their results - including their name, the title of the program, date completed, and hours.

Are your programs endorsed by the Australian Association of Social Workers?

Yes. All Mental Health Academy programs are endorsed by the Australian Association of Social Workers (AASW) for continuing professional development (CPD) hours. The current endorsement is valid until 30 June 2017. The Endorsement Reference Number for these programs is AASW160309.

How long do I have to complete a course or video?

Mental Health Academy courses and videos are self-paced and can be completed progressively, at any time. Whilst we do not stipulate a minimum period to complete any program, please note you must be an active member to gain access to any courses or videos.
