September 2023’s MHA YouTube channel video releases explored forgiveness modalities, ways clinicians build resistance in clients, the art of compassion, the neuroscience of addiction and trauma, and parenting on the same page.
- The Neuroscience of Addiction and Trauma (watch video). Dr. Amanda Giordano delves into neuroscience to explain the complex circuitry that lies at the heart of addiction and how those with a history of trauma can be drawn into this process. Extracted from the MHA course, Understanding the Link Between Trauma and Addiction.
- 5 Ways Clinicians Build Resistance in Clients (watch video). Mental health clinicians, often without realising it, build resistance in clients, lowering their capacity to effectively engage. This often happens through protocols and habits that communicate something different to what the clinician is asking or intends to convey. This video explores five ways clinicians may inadvertently build resistance in clients: the assessment trap; the expert trap; the premature focus trap; the labelling trap; and blaming/chatting.
- Modalities to Help Your Clients with Forgiveness (watch video). If a client comes to you with forgiveness on their mind and, perhaps, whether they should or should not forgive someone for something, what are the issues that are likely to be bound up in the decision? How would forgiving serve the client? And if they decide to go for forgiveness, what modalities will be helpful to them in letting go of a past wrong? This video explores these questions.
- The Fine Art of Compassion (watch video): Compassion involves both self-compassion and compassion toward others. This video explores why and how mental health professionals should develop both.
- Q&A: “How can parents who have divergent opinions about discipline get on the same page?” (watch video). Dr. Justin Coulson answers a common question from clinicians working with parents. Extracted from the MHA course, Carrots & Sticks: How Rewards and Punishments Hurt Our Kids and What to Do Instead.
