Should your client join a group to help with his or her issue? Should you run a group for clients dealing with similar issues? What types of therapies and strategies make groups fly? How does the mental health professional deal with problems in the group?
Group therapy is recognised as an effective and cost-effective means of addressing issues such as addiction, personality disorders, HIV/AIDS, youth violence, depression, eating disorders, and more. A group can offer company to someone dealing with an issue, giving the person companionship on their healing journey and enhancing their will to continue taking healing actions and making healing decisions for themselves. A group can become a safe haven where crucial trust is developed. Many people who attend group therapy would not be able to afford individual therapy. But if the facilitation of the group is not skilful, the conversations can become unfocused and impersonal, and do not enhance healing.
The courses in this collection help those who would facilitate groups understand what therapies, strategies, and skills will create the most impactful group encounters, and how to deal with the inevitable problems that arise.
