A Coach-Approach to Reducing School Refusal & Disengagement in Complex Students

In this course, Elaine Taylor-Klaus discusses the dynamics behind school refusal and disengagement of complex children and explains what such students need from the adults in their lives to re-engage.

About this course

In this course, Elaine Taylor-Klaus (CPCC; MCC; Co-Founder and CEO, ImpactADHD and ImpactParents.com) outlines the challenges common to “complex” (often neurodiverse) young people, showing how the problematic behaviours are a response to feelings and events that are out of their control. Flagging four factors underlying the challenging behaviours, Taylor-Klaus explains the centrality of executive function to six areas complex children struggle with. Above-the-line and below-the-line challenges are differentiated, and Taylor-Klaus uses the metaphor of teaching someone to ride a horse to discuss the different modes that adults can be in (and in which sequence of phases) to foster optimal independence and empowerment.
