Cultural Humility: Maybe We're Doing It Wrong

In this course, Gus Raymond explains how both typical counselling education programs and the mental health industry in general militate against mental health clinicians being able to apply cultural humility, and he suggests how counsellors can begin to change that.

About this course

In this course, Gus Raymond (tLMHC, CADC, NCC, Director, A. Raymond Consulting, LLC) explains why simple self-awareness is insufficient for being able to employ cultural humility in educational and counselling contexts. Raymond details numerous examples of diversity situations not accounted for in typical counsellor education programs and shows how systemic discrimination is rife in organisations and the community in general. He suggests that community involvement, willingness to self-reflect on discomfort, building relationships with minoritised populations, and the work of building coalitions across platforms will help both our agencies and our communities to apply cultural humility concepts for the benefit of all clients.
