Culturally Competent Mental Health Care for BIPOC Clients

In this course, Dr. Carolyn Coker Ross examines the components of cultural competence in mental health care, and how practitioners can overcome implicit bias and other obstacles in order to provide it.

About this course

In this course, Dr. Carolyn Coker Ross (MD, MPH, CEDS, co-founder of the Institute for Antiracism and Equity) addresses the question of cultural competence in mental health care, and what gets in the way of providing it. Using case examples, video clips, and participant quizzes, Dr. Coker Ross describes the main components of cultural competence, including cultural and social identity, privilege, intersectionality, and implicit bias. White fragility, cultural humility, and the intergenerational trauma of ongoing racism and oppression figure in the picture, as does the importance of trauma-informed care.
