About this course

In this course, Dr. Manaan Kar Ray (Director of Adult Mental Health, Princess Alexandra Hospital; Associate Professor, Australian Institute for Suicide Research and Prevention) introduces the topic of crisis care by noting how busy emergency departments and health care systems want to deliver care. The patient wants to receive the care, but the many tasks professionals have to do can get in the way of delivering good care. One task which is paramount is safety planning, which Dr. Kar Ray’s research shows significantly improved metrics in their hospital. Outlining the PROTECT framework of safety planning he developed, Dr. Kar Ray explains the shifts in thinking necessary to implement the collaborative plan and the four levels of safety, from feeling safe to emergency, and outlines how to match interventions to the level of distress. He discusses at length how the accompanying app works.
