First Do No Harm: The Need for Trauma-Sensitive Mindfulness

In this course, Dr. David Treleaven makes the argument that contemplative practices can either be helpful or harmful for clients with trauma and shows how to modify the practices to render them more appropriate for such clients.

About this course

In this course, Dr. David Treleaven proposes three tenets for engaging contemplative practice that clinicians and meditation facilitators should keep in mind when working with traumatised clients. He outlines the four “R” definition of trauma-informed care, explains the problem with trauma-engendered interoceptive and exteroceptive sensation incongruence, and discusses modifications which can be made to suit clients who have experienced trauma.
