About this course
In this course, Dr. Judith Beck (Ph.D.; President of Beck Institute for Cognitive Behaviour Therapy; Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine), begins with a brief overview of the main principles of CBT, including a correction regarding the myth of the unimportance of the therapeutic relationship in CBT. Dr. Beck explains collaborative empiricism, which is a fundamental tenet of CBT; how treatment plans are used; and the directions into which CBT is expanding. She refers to CBT as an integrative psychotherapy, bringing in techniques from mindfulness, DBT, ACT, motivational interviewing, positive psychology, and more. Teletherapy, CBT apps, AI, and therapist-assisted CBT computer programs are all increasingly part of the CBT landscape, as are adaptations to diverse communities. Dr. Beck also underscores the increasing importance of CT-R, or recovery-oriented cognitive therapy.
