Psychological Treatments for Older Adults Living in Residential Aged Care Settings
Psychological Treatments for Older Adults Living in Residential Aged Care Settings
In this course, Professor Sunil Bhar, Swinburne University of Technology, examines several therapies and adaptations thereof which have been successfully implemented with residents of aged care facilities, who are seen to have rising levels of anxiety and depression but poor access to mental health care. Research, case study, and outlining of methods used deepen insight about the needs of this growing demographic.
About this course
In this course, Professor Sunil Bhar, Swinburne University of Technology, observes that an increasing proportion of Australians are older adults. Many of those adults living in aged care facilities have significant levels of anxiety and depression, and yet as a group they have poor access to mental health services. With the COVID-19 pandemic exacerbating already high levels of mental health issues, Bhar and associates experimented with several types of therapy, concluding that psychological treatments can work with older people, even those living with dementia, if the treatments are adapted. Bhar discusses research and practical programs using telehealth, adapted CBT, reminiscence therapy, and other supportive therapies which have been successful.
