Reimagining Latinx Clients: Conceptualisation Through an Acculturative Stress Lens

In this course, Dr. Kirsis Dipre shows how current conceptualisations of Latinx clients are inadequate in that they assume a homogenised culture. She explains how viewing such clients through the lens of acculturative stress instead can improve mental health outcomes for Latinx clients.

About this course

In this course, Dr. Kirsis Dipre (PhD, LPC, NCC; core faculty member, Counselling at Northwestern Program; Member, Advisory Council for the NBCC Foundation Minority Fellowship Program), defines “Latinx” and shares statistics and anecdotal comments that reveal under-utilisation of mental health services by Latinx clients. The comments align with current inadequate conceptualisations of Latinx clients, which assume a homogenised culture. Instead, Dr. Dipre explains that the focus of treatment for Latinx clients should be one which recognises the intersectionality and context-dependent identifications experienced by many, and which acknowledges the impact of acculturative stress.
