Resilience: Myths and Strategies

In this course, Dr. Justin Coulson unpacks myths and misconceptions about building resilence, and provides practical strategies to support resilience building in children.

About this course

Are we raising a bubble-wrapped, cotton-wool, spoon-fed generation? Parents worry that their children are lacking resilience. Kids fail an exam, falter in a friendship, lose a sports contest and fall in a heap. In more serious cases, we see children struggling with stress and anxiety, or feeling hopeless and helpless with depression. Too many children (and adults) are just “getting by”, but there is not enough flourishing. In this course, Dr. Justin Coulson unpacks the myths that we buy into, thinking that we are building resilience when we are actually undermining it. Should we tell kids to toughen up? Is it ok to be involved in their lives or is that helicoptering? Do we need to praise them to “pump up their tyres”? Maybe if they win a sports contest they'll be more resilient? Find out what works - and what doesn't - when it comes to building resilience in children, with clear and practical strategies practitioners can share with parents for immediate effect. The course concludes with a short Q&A session with the Dr. Coulson.
