Schizophrenic Spectrum and Other Psychotic Disorders
Schizophrenic Spectrum and Other Psychotic Disorders
This course provides an introduction to schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders on the spectrum, and discusses the treatment options available.
About this course
Successful treatment of schizophrenic spectrum and other psychotic disorders depends on a number of interacting factors. While antipsychotic medication can help control the symptoms of psychosis associated with disorders on the spectrum, it cannot help such clients find and maintain a job, establish effective social relationships, increase their coping skills, or teach them to communicate well with others. Poverty, homelessness, and unemployment are often associated with this illness, but effective treatment can help prevent such outcomes. If a schizophrenia spectrum client finds appropriate treatment and complies with it, he or she can make a full recovery. This course provides an introduction to schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders on the spectrum, and discusses the treatment options available. You will learn the diagnostic criteria of schizophrenia and the other major disorders on the schizophrenia spectrum, examine the different types of schizophrenia, and look into factors influencing its development (including discussion on genetics, the dopamine theory, the role of the environment, substance use, family interaction, and prognosis). You will read about the treatment options available, including antipsychotic medication, psychotherapy and psycho-education, family Interventions, social skills training, relapse prevention, supportive counselling, and prevention.
