Silent Killer: Covert & Overt Relationship Distress

In this course, psychologist Dr. Michael Acton reminds us of the importance of creating a safe space to receive client disclosures and why it may be difficult for some clients to make them. He discusses the similarities and differences between bereavement grief and that of relational breakup.

About this course

In this course, psychologist Dr. Michael Acton, an author and speaker/presenter about relationships, observes that when people are suicidal, they are in deep mental anguish, so mental health helpers need to “get inside their head with them”, meeting them where they’re at with empathy and patience, but also with a quest to discover what they are not saying because it’s too hard. Dr. Acton cites the grim statistics of how many people die after they leave an abuser, and how common it is for someone to experience grief, possibly leading to suicide, after a relational breakup. He discusses the difference between bereavement grief and that of relational breakup.
