Sitting with Aboriginal Clients: Hidden Cultural Differences

In this course, the notions of high- and low-context cultures are explored in order to understand the contrast between primarily high-context Aboriginal cultures and mainstream Australian culture, which is predominantly low-context.

About this course

In this course, anthropologist Edward Hall’s notions of high- and low-context are explored in relation to the cultural universals – the primary message systems – of association, interaction, time, space, and teaching-learning. For each of the five cultural universals, evidence is presented to show that Aboriginal cultures tend to function in high-context ways, in contrast to the primarily low-context mainstream Australian culture.
