Suicide Prevention with Disaster- and Trauma-affected Clients

In this course, Prof. Cirecie West-Olatunji, Ph.D. (Xavier University of Louisiana), explains why disaster- and trauma-affected individuals are more vulnerable to suicide and proposes a culture-centred disaster response training model to respond to the need for service providers in the aftermath of disasters.

About this course

Prof. Cirecie West-Olatunji, Ph.D. (Xavier University of Louisiana), increases viewers’ awareness about how marginalised, vulnerable individuals are uniquely impacted by disaster and traumatic stress. First sharing relevant statistics, Prof. West-Olatunji outlines both the buffers and interventions that assist suicidal individuals and also the common suicide intervention errors that could fail to prevent a suicide. West-Olatunji briefly discusses disaster mental health models, including her own culture-centred disaster counselling model; this was developed in the wake of her long tenure of service in disaster zones. Counsellor burnout is also flagged.
