In this course Dr Lucy Biddle, senior lecturer in medical sociology at Bristol Medical School, University of Bristol, focuses on the ways in which media reporting and social media and internet use may contribute to suicidal thoughts, plans, and attempts. Dr Biddle shares the results of her multi-component studies of suicide-related internet use, differentiating between low-severity and high-severity users. Acknowledging that some impact of the internet can be positive, Dr Biddle explores the complex picture of internet use by those who are suicidal, with suggestions for how clinicians can successfully intervene.
