The Mental Status Examination: Description and Demonstration

In this course, Dr John Sommers-Flanagan, Associate Professor, University of Montana, explains the purposes of the MSE and discusses its chief aspects, highlighting both its clinical value and also cautionary notes for using it. As Sommers-Flanagan works through assessment on several of the nine standard categories of the MSE with Kelly, a volunteer from the audience, numerous concepts are introduced, such as the distinction between mood and affect and ways to clinically classify speech patterns.
