The Psychopharmacology of Anxiety

In this course, Dr Cyrus Marcellus Ellis, Ph.D., Associate Professor, Governors State University, defines psychopharmacology as an individual’s approach to taking a given medication, and the construction, use, and side effects of that medication. He examines the central role of the neurotransmitter GABA in determining how anxious a person is, and explains the way benzodiazepines work to regulate GABA levels, including when taken in conjunction with other sedating drugs such as alcohol. The roles of the parasympathetic system and pre-synaptic and post-synaptic neurons are also covered.
