The Window of Tolerance in Real Life: Beyond the Diagram

In this course, Rachel Tomlinson explores dysregulation and the Window of Tolerance framework, and outlines how learners can recognise and respond to dysregulation in real time using subtle, practical interventions that maintain therapeutic safety, connection, and momentum.

About this course

In this course, registered psychologist Rachel Tomlinson, author and trauma-informed clinician, introduces a practical framework for identifying and responding to nervous system dysregulation within therapy sessions. Moving beyond the traditional Window of Tolerance diagram, the course explores how dysregulation appears behaviourally, cognitively, emotionally, physiologically, and relationally in real clinical work. You will learn how to identify subtle cues early, apply micro interventions without disrupting therapeutic flow, adjust pacing and questioning styles, and use co-regulation effectively. The workshop also addresses therapist self-regulation and the impact of clinician nervous system states on therapeutic outcomes, providing highly practical strategies that can be immediately integrated into clinical practice.
