Wellness-Based Addictions Counselling

In this course, Dr. Philip Clarke shows you how wellness-based addictions counselling can not only help clients in treatment to achieve higher levels of wellness; it can also positively affect clients’ substance use. The principles and wellness assessments you can use are outlined, and you get a glimpse of how wellness is threaded through the whole relapse prevention effort.

About this course

In this course, Dr. Philip Clarke (Ph.D., LCMHC, Associate Teaching Professor, Wake Forest University) takes you on an energetic tour of WBAC: Wellness-Based Addictions Counselling. Asserting the four foundational elements of balance, interconnectedness, holism, and strength, Dr. Clarke shows how these elements manifest in wellness models, such as SAMHSA’s eight-dimension model. He identifies wellness assessments that capture the client’s whole life (not merely their using habits) and offers examples of wellness-based interventions which work for the relapse prevention aspect of addictions treatment. A wellness plan is offered which can replace the traditional treatment plan.
