What Role Does Hope Play in Suicide Prevention?

In this course, Dr. Lyn O’Grady explains how hope and hopelessness show up across contemporary suicide theories and clinical practice, and how clinicians can build realistic, grounded hope without minimising pain – especially when risk is acute.

About this course

In this course, Dr. Lyn O’Grady (MAPS, FCCOM, Community Psychologist and Psychology Board-approved supervisor) introduces how hope functions within suicidality – from its role in major theoretical models through to practical, day-to-day clinical strategies. She connects research insights to real-world decision-making: how to hold hope while taking risk seriously, how to avoid unhelpful “positivity,” how to work skilfully with safety planning and reasons for living versus reasons for dying, and how the therapeutic alliance itself can become a pathway back toward life. You will leave with a clearer framework for integrating hope as a protective factor while maintaining precision, realism, and strong ethical care in suicide prevention practice.
