Dr. Allen E. Ivey is an expert in Microcounselling and Developmental Counseling and Therapy (DCT) who is currently an Emeritus Professor at the University of Massachusetts.

Allen E. Ivey received his doctorate from Harvard and his undergraduate degree (Phi Beta Kappa) from Stanford. He is Distinguished University Professor (Emeritus) at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. He is also a Courtesy Professor at the University of South Florida. A Diplomate of the American Board of Professional Psychology, Dr. Ivey is a past-president and Fellow of the Society of Counseling Psychology of the American Psychological Association and is been a life member of American Counseling Association. He is also an elected Fellow of The Society for the Psychological Study of Ethnic Minority Issues of APA and the first Fellow of the Asian American Psychological Association. He considers his greatest honor was being named Elder of the Multicultural Movement at the Multicultural Conference and Summit in 2005.<br/><br/>The originator of microcounseling and Developmental Counseling and Therapy (DCT), Dr. Ivey has won wide recognition and national and international honors including A.C.A.’s Professional Development Award. Author or co-author of over 40 sole and co-authored books and 200 articles and chapters, his works have been translated into 22 languages. He did original work on the multicultural implications of the microskills in 1968-74 and has been increasing his work in multicultural studies ever since. His recent books include the 8th Edition of Intentional Interviewing and Counseling (Cengage, A Theory of Multicultural Counseling and Therapy (Brooks/Cole) and the 6th Edition of Theories of Counseling and Psychotherapy: A Multicultural Approach.<br/><br/>Neuroscience and its relation to counseling and therapy is his most recent interest in writing and presentations. Also, the implications of microcounseling for the coaching movement has become relevant. Spirituality and multicultural counseling is a recent extension of his work on interviewing skills plus continued multicultural and developmental thinking. Allen Ivey’s recent writings have focused on “Psychotherapy as Liberation” and on generating a theoretical/practical approach for working in a positive developmental frame with so-called “pathology” and DSM-5.
