<p>Dr. Michael Brooks is a Professor of Counsellor Education at North Carolina A&T State University (NCAT) in Greensboro, North Carolina. Dr. Brooks holds the distinction of leading the only CACREP-accredited HBCU Counsellor Education doctoral program, and the outstanding graduates of his program are transforming communities across the United States. Dr. Brooks is dedicated to advancing professional opportunities for graduates of HBCUs, and his mentorship of exemplary doctoral students and support for their transition into academic and administrative positions are strengthening the network of mental health resources and advancing equitable access to vital mental health care.</p> <p> </p> <p>Dr. Brooks received a BA in Psychology from Morehouse College (1996) and his MA and Ph.D. (2000, 2003, respectively) in Counsellor Education and Supervision from the University of Central Florida. His research and scholarship focus on factors contributing to the success of Black males, counsellor education pedagogy, ex-offender recidivism, and vocational rehabilitation. Throughout Dr. Brooks’s more than 20-year career in higher education, he has published over 50 peer-reviewed articles and has been awarded $5 million in grant funding. Dr. Brooks’ teaching and research are informed by his professional service in government mental health services settings, substance abuse counselling, and employee assistance programs. His community engagement reflects his commitment to advocacy through action, shaping policy, and supporting the communities he serves.</p> <p> </p> <p>The professional counselling community has recognised and celebrated Dr. Brooks’ achievements and professional impact. He was honoured with a 2023 American Counselling Association (ACA) Presidential Citation and a 2023 Outstanding Teaching Award from the Southern Association for Counsellor Education and Supervision (SACES). Dr. Brooks was selected as an ACA Fellow and previously served as a member of the North Carolina Board of Licenced Professional Counsellors. </p> <p> </p> <p>Dr. Brooks is inspired daily by his wife, who shares his commitment to propelling healthy communities forward, and lives that commitment through her work as a physician. He is also inspired by his daughters, in whom he sees the possibility of a better, more robust, more just, and vibrant world.</p>
