Silvia Sara Canetto is Professor of Psychology at Colorado State University, USA, where she holds appointments in the Psychology and Human-Development-and-Family-Studies Departments, in the Women's Studies Program, and in the International Studies Program. She was born and raised in Italy. She has graduate degrees from the University of Padova, Italy; the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Israel, and Northwestern University Medical School, Chicago, USA. She is author of over 200 publications, mostly on gender, culture, and suicidal behavior. Her 1998 article entitled “The gender paradox in suicide” (co-authored with Sakinofsky) is the third most-cited article in Suicide and Life-Threatening Behavior. She also has a record of research and publications on cultural scripts of gender, science and engineering; on women’s human rights; and on teaching about diversity intersectionally and transnationally. She is the recipient of several national and international awards, including the American Association of Suicidology’s (AAS) Shneidman early-career award, and AAS highest suicide-prevention honor, the Dublin award; the American Psychological Association’s Heritage Award for long-standing contributions to women and gender research and education; and the International Council of Psychologists’ Denmark-Gunvald Award for feminist research and service. She is "Fellow" of the American Psychological Association, the Association for Psychological Science, and the Gerontological Society of America.
