Designing Clinical Interventions to Prevent Youth Self-harm and Suicide

In this course, Dr Katrina Witt, Monash University, reviews the current status of evidence for interventions to prevent self-harm and suicide in young people, notes the limitations of the evidence base, and suggests future directions for research into suicide and self-harm prevention in young people.

About this course

In this course, Dr Katrina Witt, Monash University, discusses the results of a Cochrane meta-analysis of RCTs of interventions delivered specifically to young people with a recent history of self-harm. Given the paucity of total studies, the variability in the “TAU” (treatment as usual) conditions, and the difficulty attracting funding for the length of time needed to complete effective treatments, Dr Witt suggests future directions for research which will help us to better understand the pathways to self-harm and the means of reducing the repetition of self-harm incidents.
