From Viral Memes to Manosphere Extremes: How Social Media Is Reshaping Young Men’s Health and Relationships – and What We Can Do to Curb the Harms

In this course, Dr. Krista Fisher explains how young men’s rapidly evolving digital environments—from algorithm-driven social media feeds to influencer ecosystems—are shaping mental health, identity formation, and relationship expectations, and why clinically informed, non-alarmist engagement is essential to curb harms while leveraging opportunities for prevention and health promotion.

About this course

In this course, Dr. Krista Fisher (Ph.D., Research Fellow, Movember Institute of Men’s Health) introduces a contemporary, practice-relevant overview of how young men’s online worlds are reshaping wellbeing and relationships — spanning the mainstreaming of manosphere-adjacent ideas, algorithmic amplification, and the real-world impacts of masculinity influencer content. Drawing on large-scale survey findings and an innovative approach using young men’s own platform usage data, the course equips clinicians to interpret digital exposure with nuance, recognise risk and protective dynamics, and respond with credible, relationship-building conversations that support healthier identity development, safer behavioural choices, and more constructive gender and relationship expectations.
