The Importance of Psychoeducation in the Treatment of ADHD

Parents, teachers, and others can benefit from reviewing da Camara’s presentation of facts about this neurodevelopmental condition and the implications for children living with it.

About this course

In this course, Grace da Camara (Safe Zone Counselling) begins with some basic facts about ADHD and its aetiologies and shows graphs to illustrate the high incidence of co-morbidities. She explains why multimodal treatment is best for the child and distinguishes between medication and non-medication treatments, which mainly reduce symptoms and improve wellbeing, respectively. There is extended discussion of how ADHD impacts executive functioning, with these skills lagging at both school and home. Da Camara introduces the notion of scaffolding to illustrate how parents can move from “parenting to protect” to “parenting to prepare” for children with ADHD. She suggest fun ways for kids to improve and explains how emotional dysregulation occurs with the condition. The anger iceberg and motivation (intrinsic/extrinsic) are examined, along with developing a growth mindset, noting the particular communication challenges children with ADHD have, and re-calibrating expectations to meet the child’s reality.
