Understanding ADHD Through an Executive Functioning Lens
Understanding ADHD Through an Executive Functioning Lens
In this course, Grace da Camara explains how understanding ADHD through an executive functioning and self-regulation lens can help clinicians move beyond interpretations based solely on attention, behaviour, motivation, or effort. Exploring working memory, organisation, time management, task initiation, emotional regulation, cognitive flexibility, planning, and follow-through, the course demonstrates how executive functioning difficulties affect everyday life across the lifespan. You are introduced to assessment considerations, developmental differences, environmental influences, masking and compensation, and practical strengths-based approaches for supporting more sustainable functioning.
About this course
In this course, psychologist Grace da Camara introduces an executive functioning and self-regulation framework for understanding ADHD across the lifespan. Moving beneath visible behaviours such as distractibility, impulsivity, disorganisation, emotional reactivity, procrastination, and inconsistent performance, Grace examines the underlying processes that can make it difficult for people with ADHD to translate knowledge and intentions into sustained action. The course explores working memory, time blindness, task initiation, emotional regulation, developmental differences, masking, compensation, contextual variability, assessment, and the impact of ADHD across education, employment, relationships, and family life. Through practical examples, you learn how assessment of executive functioning can identify meaningful intervention targets and how external supports, scaffolding, environmental adjustments, psychoeducation, skill development, and multimodal intervention can reduce executive load while building capacity and independence. A strengths-based, non-blaming framework helps you replace assumptions about effort and motivation with a more clinically useful understanding of capacity, context, and support.
