Understanding Gambling Harm: The Psychology Behind Risk, Reward and Recovery
In this course, Dr. Anastasia Hronis explains how gambling harms develop across a spectrum – from low-level risk through to diagnosable gambling disorder – and unpacks the neuroscience of dopamine, simulated gambling, and reinforcement schedules. Drawing on clinical work, research, and stepped-care public health models, she explores youth vulnerability, cultural and socioeconomic drivers, and evidence-based interventions to support clients in reducing gambling harm and rebuilding values-based lives.
About this course

In this course, clinical psychologist and researcher Dr. Anastasia Hronis (B Psych, Hons; M Clin Psych; AMusA; LMusA; Ph.D.) introduces a comprehensive framework for understanding gambling harm across the continuum from “silent” early-stage problems to severe gambling disorder. Integrating prevalence data, DSM-5 diagnostic criteria, and Blaszczynski & Nower’s pathways model, she explains how dopamine, intermittent reinforcement, social casinos, loot boxes, and cultural norms interact to maintain risk-taking and chasing losses. Dr. Hronis then outlines a stepped-care approach spanning prevention, early intervention, and high-intensity treatment, highlighting CBT, DBT skills, values work, and practical harm-reduction strategies that clinicians can use to support clients and families affected by gambling.
